Want to Learn How to Be a Champion?

Championship of Dice Rolling Headline Events will be held in 3 stages. At the beginning of the event, each participant will receive a D20 to use in the event:

Stage 1: Face Off Challenge (Depending on Number of Participants)

You will face off directly against a single opponent and will each roll a D20. Winners will progress to the qualifying round - eliminated competitors are invited to join us for the remainder of our main stage show.

Stage 2: Group Round

Each table or group will simultaneously participate in a series of D20 rolloffs. Roll the highest number? Get a point! Roll a natural 20, get a second bonus point.
The first person in each group to get 3 points is invited to join us on the main stage to compete in our sho!

Stage 3: The Main Stage Competition

This is where all of the action is! Groups of 4 will compete in roll-offs, scoring a point for the highest roll and a bonus point for rolling a natural 20.

Official Rules Handbook Version 1.0

6/1/2025

The Championship of Dice Rolling is a competition brought to you by Foam Brain Games and Black Oak Workshop. Our overriding principle is that this should be a fun and fair competition to determine who is the ‘best’ at a largely random event. As such, wherever there is confusion in the rules or a potential exploit one should consider the guiding principle of ‘what is the fairest and most fun choice or resolution’.

Equipment

For each event, each competitor will need a twenty sided die, which will be provided by the organizer. To whatever extent possible, dice will be uniform amongst all competitors and fair. Dice used for Championship of Dice Rolling should be made of Acrylic or Resin and have a polished smooth finish with painted numbers.

Face Off Challenge

For very large events, participants may start out with a sudden deathmatch challenge. The form of this challenge may vary from event to event and will not typically be announced before the event. This is designed to reduce the number of participants to a suitable number (100-150) for the heat rounds.

Group Round

For larger events, in order to reach a final round of 16 semifinalists a series of heats will be played off simultaneously. For each of these heats, 2 or more participants will be grouped together (ideally making 8 or 16 total groups).

Members of each group will simultaneously roll their D20 in a group roll-off fashion. The player(s) who roll the highest number will get 1 point, and the first person in each group to receive 3 total points will advance to the finals. If the highest number is a natural 20, that player will get a second bonus point. In the event of 8 total heats, the second person in each group will advance as well. In the event of a tie between multiple people who would advance (and this number is higher than the number of advancement slots available), those players will roll off in an additional roll, the winner of which will win the round. This will continue until the correct number of people have advanced.

Main Stage Competition

Qualifying competitors will advance from the Heat Rounds to the Competition Rounds, which will be seeded randomly via a method chosen by the judges.

The Quarter-Finals will consist of 4 matches of 4 participants, each accumulating points as described above in the heat rounds. The first participant to receive 5 points in each Quarter-Final group will advance to the semi-finals. All other members of the group will be considered as quarter-finalists and will receive appropriate prizing as such. As with the heat rounds, in the event of a tie a sudden death round will be used to determine the winner.

The Semi-Finals will consist of 2 matches of 2 participants, each accumulating points as described above in the heat rounds. The first participant to receive 5 points will advance to the finals. The other participant will receive semi-finalist prizes.

The finals will be run as above however the winner will be the first person to accumulate 8 points and will earn the title of Dice Rolling Champion

Dice Rolling Procedure

It is expected that all participants will act to ensure the dice rolls of themselves and others are conducted in a fair manner. Dice should be picked up and rolled from a closed hand without any examination or setting of the dice face prior to the roll. Dice are expected to hit the table or dice tray at an angle and direction that causes them to continue to roll and or bounce until finally reaching a stop. Dice that do not roll or bounce may, at the discretion of the judging staff, be required to be rerolled.

Dice that do not land in the designated rolling area (either dice tray or table) do not count and will need to be rerolled. Dice that land only partially inside the area will need to be rerolled as well.

Obstacles and other structures should be removed as much as possible from the dice rolling area in order to prevent these from impacting the dice roll. Dice that hit such obstructions will need to be rerolled no matter what their landing face is. Participants and spectators should ensure their bodies and belongings do not impact the dice as well.

‘Cocked dice’ or dice that otherwise do not land with their top face parallel to the rolling surface are at the discretion of the event judge. If there is no event judge, these should be rerolled as well.

If appropriate, assistive devices such as dice rolling towers are acceptable in order to ensure this event is open and fair to all participants regardless of physical ability.

Judging Staff

The judging staff (and the event promoters) are the final arbiters of the rules and their rulings are final.
